Instructions

    • 1

Locate the credit card number for the card for which you wish to cancel a payment. Make sure you know where the account number is located, and be ready to key the number into your touch-tine phone or to speak the number over the phone. This number is on your credit card, or you might find it on a recent bill.

    • 2

Look on the back of the credit card for the customer service number, or find the phone number on your recent bill. It usually begins with "1-800." Call the number.

    • 3

Give the information requested by the customer service representative at the credit card company or by the company's automated response system.

    • 4

Tell them the reason you are canceling the payment, if you want to, when the representative asks. Do not feel you have to give a reason if you don't want to.

    • 5

Write down the confirmation number. This is especially important as it is your immediate proof that the payment was canceled. For your benefit, write down the time of the call and the name of the representative as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • Speak clearly and write down the time of the call and the name of the service rep onto your bill.

  • Don't let yourself get talked into additional services. Some credit companies use calls to the service center as an opportunity to sell existing customers other products.
