Hip scarves are used in belly dancing and are similar to cover ups. They're meant to put an emphasis on movement and draw attention to this part of the body for the dancer. They are usually covered in decorative sequins and jewels, but are really quite easy to make. It is very similar to making a regular scarf while including some beading. It can also be tied around the waist very easily using the ends of the scarf.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choose a gauze, taffeta or light cotton fabric. The fabrics should be thin enough to show off the dancer's legs and body while still supporting beading. It may also be a wise choice to select a fabric with beading already.

  2. Step 2

Cut out a piece of fabric about 60 inches by 25 inches.

  3. Step 3

Fold over 1/4-inch of the fabric all around the scarf and press.

  4. Step 4

Fold over another 1/4-inch of the fabric all around and pin it down.

  5. Step 5

Trim the corners of the scarf to make sure it lays flat.

  6. Step 6

Sew closely to the top fold all around the edge of the scarf.

  7. Step 7

Pin and sew any beading to your scarf.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your scarf has beading around the edges, make sure to skip a stitch at that point to avoid breaking any needles.
