How to Overcome Codependency

Overcoming codependency can be extremely difficult. If you feel that you cannot live without someone in your life, you may suffer from codependency. If you feel like you are drawn to the problems of others and need to control them through criticism, begging, and acting like a victim, you may be a codependent. If you put the needs of others before your own and are out of touch with your own feelings and needs, you may suffer from codependency. If you are in an abusive relationship, you are probably suffering from codependency.

Follow the steps below to overcome codependency.

      To overcome codependency, it's important to admit you have a problem. Your codependent tendencies most likely developed in your childhood. People who come from backgrounds with substance, verbal and physical abuse are more likely to suffer from codependency.

      See a therapist who is familiar with codependency and who will help you deal with your issues. A good therapist will probably recommend you join a support group with others who share similar backgrounds.

      Start focusing on yourself to overcome codependency. Be kind and gentle with yourself. Focus on your achievements and what you want to achieve in life. People have probably been beating you down with so much verbal and/or physical abuse that you've internalized their abusive statements and actions and feel you don't deserve the best life has to offer.

      Detach from the toxic people in your life. Are the people in your relationships draining you emotionally, physically, and spiritually? Make yourself your number one priority.

      Work on finding the underlying reasons for your need to control others. Why do you feel so much fear? What expectations do you put on others? Are they realistic?

      Start doing daily positive affirmations to combat codependency. Tell yourself you are a good person and you deserve good to come into your life. Make a list of your positive attributes. Affirm daily that you deserve to be treated with love, dignity and respect.

      Learn how to say "no." Say it out loud. Learning how to say no is one of the most important things you can do to take care of yourself and overcome codependency.
