Step 1
A dislocated worker is an individual who has lost their job due to no fault of their own. Being fired, quitting your job or otherwise leaving by your own will excludes you from the dislocated worker category.
-
Step 2
A reduction in force or substantial layoff by your employer qualifies you as a dislocated worker. This may be due to the shape of the economy or due to the outsourcing of positions to foreign employers. These individuals are highly likely to be eligible for unemplyment benefits.
-
Step 3
If you have left your place of employment and are unlikely to return to the previous industry of occupation due to a decline in the need for your profession, you may fall into the dislocated worker's category.
-
Step 4
Dislocated workers are those employees whose employer has shut down due to a natural disaster or residing community's economic condition.
-
Step 5
A displaced homemaker also qualifies as a dislocated worker. A dislocated homemaker is a man or woman who is at least 30 years old and has been working in the home to provide unpaid services to family members. A homemaker is displaced when the source of income is no longer (due to separation or death) and they find themselves unable to find substantial work due to being out of the workforce for so long.
-
Step 6
If one or more of the above describes your employment situation, you are likely to be able to claim unemployment benefits. If you have determined yourself to be a dislocated worker, you may also be eligible for government funded worker retraining programs. If the skills you possess are no longer in demand in the workforce, you are likely to be eligible for retraining programs and/or schooling to help you become employable again.
