Writers need a trusted and impartial reader to proofread their work. Although this is ideal for most writers, sometimes that person has other commitments and the writer is left to fend for himself.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A printout of your work
  • A colorful pen or pencil (not black or blue)
  1. Step 1

After finishing your project, put it aside for at least a day. Don’t look at it, read it, or even think about it.

  2. Step 2

After the one or two days have passed, take the printout of your project into a quiet room where you can work uninterrupted.

  3. Step 3

Read your work aloud. Make sure that you listen carefully to yourself and that you read exactly what is on the page. Your brain will try to read what you intended to write instead of what is actually there.

  4. Step 4

With the colorful pen or pencil, make notes, mark, and underline anything you want to change or fix.

  5. Step 5

Go back to your computer and make all the changes necessary to your work.

  6. Step 6

Repeat the steps above until you are happy with your work. However, be aware that you can be your toughest critic and need to know when your project is finished. That critic can make you proofread the same work for weeks and still find errors in it.
