Eating healthier doesn't mean you can't have cheese sauces, chips, bread, meat or snacks. It means making healthier choices about what you're putting that cheese sauce on or maybe what the chips are made out of. The following is a list of tips to help you make better and healthier choices about buying and eating food.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    whole grain NOT multi grain

    whole grain NOT multi grain

Don't be fooled by the term "multi-grain", buy "whole grain" instead

When something is labeled "multi-grain" it just means that there are different kinds of grains in that product. Those grains could still be bleached and processed like white bread is. You want to buy things that say "whole grain" because this means that the grain hasn't been overly processed and still retains most of it's nutritional value.

  2. Step 2

Minimize your consumption of refined carbohydrates that have little nutritional value : regular pasta, white bread, white rice, refined cereals, cakes, cookies, pretzels, sugars,...

  3. Step 3

Eat complex (unrefined) carbohydrates : whole- grain breads, whole-grain cereals and pasta, whole grain brown rice, fresh fruits and vegetables, dried beans and peas, potatoes in their skin.

These supply B vitamins, trace minerals, protein and fiber.

  4. Step 4

Substitute sugar with fruit, fruit juice concentrates (white grape, apple, orange, for example - undiluted, frozen or not)or honey. Don't just turn to sugar substitutes which I feel have questionable chemical additives.

  5. Step 5
    fresh and organic is best

Buy fresh vegetables and fruits in season, fresh-frozen or canned. If you're buying canned don't buy ones with added sugar/ syrups, sodium/salt or fat.

  6. Step 6
    stir fry isn't hard

Steam, grill, bake and stir-fry your food instead of frying.

  7. Step 7

Get everyone in your household to eat healthier. It's easier to eat healthy if you aren't alone.

  8. Step 8
    nutritional facts label

Remember to read the nutritional labels on what you buy at the grocery store. For example, I needed chicken broth for a recipe. The first kind I picked up had over 700 g of sodium! After reading a few more labels I found one that had only 30 g of sodium.

  9. Step 9

Get lots of vitamin C from things like green leafy and yellow vegetables, yellow fruit, orange juice or take a vitamin supplement. Your body can't store vitamin C so be sure you get plenty every day.

  10. Step 10

Iron is the number one vitamin deficiency in the United States. Be sure to get your iron either from food you eat or take a supplement.

  11. Step 11

juicing can help gets kids to "eat" their vegetables

if you don't like eating fruits and vegetables try juicing them. I love carrot apple juice! A pound of carrots and 2 or 3 apples makes 2 glasses of juice.
