Want to know how to make a really good Squidoo lens? Read on to learn from a "Giant Squid" the basics a beginner needs to know in order to build a good Squidoo lens from scratch.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Squidoo account
  • Pics ready to upload
  1. Step 1

Remember that original content is king in making a great lens on Squidoo. Plan on having three or more text modules. These don't have to be overly long (and probably shouldn't be any more than 400 words at the most), but these help break up all the other modules, as well, and makes the lens pleasing to the visitor's eye while providing good information.

  2. Step 2

Add pictures to each module. Every text module allows you to add a picture without needing to know HTML, and adding pictures isn't all that difficult to do with the other modules, as well. Pictures can help break up the text and add some nice images.

  3. Step 3

Add other modules. Generally having more is better, but don't overdo it. Eight modules trying to sell stuff from eBay is way over the top, but having one eBay, one Amazon, one visitor poll, a link list, and one Polaroid is a good combination that can help give you a very good looking lens.

  4. Step 4

Always add a Guest book at the bottom. It's not a good lens without a chance for people to leave feedback, so if you want to make the kind of lenses that rank highly, always add a Guest book for comments.

  5. Step 5

Mix and match the various choices in modules to find the lay-outs that look best. Nothing beats good old fashioned trail and error to find the best looking set up for your Squidoo lenses, and different lenses and lens topics might require different lay outs.

  6. Step 6

And now you have a great Squidoo lens. Feel free to share it on the "check out my new lens" forum at Squidoo to get more feedback and hear others' ideas for how to improve what you've already done, and have fun as the money begins coming in!

Tips & Warnings
  • Mix the order of modules. You don't want 10 text modules followed by 5 amazon, etc. Intersperse them for the best mixes and matches.
  • Don't oversell! Adding an eBay or Amazon module or two isn't a bad thing, but if you have 4 sales modules to every text module, you're not going to sell a lot, and the lens isn't going to look good.

on 10/23/2009 This is the best information I have found on How to Make a Good Squidoo Lens. I became a member in April 09 and didn't get past one lens. I was lost. Now I am going to check yours out and hopefully produce more there, too. Thanks for the information!

on 9/1/2009 Hey "soldier,"

Thanks for the great comment. Number two in a category is extremely impressive. I think you're definitely on to something. I notice with many of these online writing websites, the more of them you can figure out how to use in conjunction to increase your writing profits, the better they work. Glad to hear things are working out great for your online writing! Keep it up.

on 9/1/2009 Hey everyone, thanks for the comments. Sha4852, glad you found this article helpful, and I'm very glad that you liked my Squidoo lens on getting started as a freelance writer. I put a TON of time and love into that page, and the comments and positive reports I've received from it have really been extremely rewarding. It's done all right on the profit side of things, as well :)

on 8/18/2009 I just checked out your first link on squidoo, and even though I've not read it all yet, it's an excellent article and shows how to mix content with pics. Not at all what I expected.

I will be stopping back to check it out further and some of your other links. I'm especially interested in the media you mentioned on writing better ehow articles.

Thanks again.

on 8/18/2009 Thanks for the great article. I've signed up, but not written anything as yet. It sounds like it might be used more for pics with text sections to explain the pics? I'll have to do more homework on the site.
