Choose Motorcycle Boots

Finding the right pair of shoes to ride a motorcycle is important, not only for your comfort, but also for your safety. Here's some tips on choosing the right shoes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • List of outlets in your area that have motorcycle gear
  • Half a day to shop
  • Money!
  1. Step 1

Know your shoe size in US and UK. It's also helpful to know in the Italian sizes. Usually UK is one number less than US sizes. You can find your Italian size by googling "Italian Shoe Size Conversion". You need this because these are the main manufacturing areas for motorcycle boots.

  2. Step 2

Realize that any old shoe will not protect your feet like a motorcycle boot is engineered to, and be prepared to spend money to protect your feet. They're the only feet you've got, and you're worth it. Any old shoe won't have the thin toe you need to get under the shifter; steel-toed boots will be too tall in the toe to get under the shifter; and sneakers/flip flops/boat shoes/etc., will not hold up to the stresses you put your feet through when riding a motorcycle (sudden stops where you must put your feet down, taking corners and leaning low enough that you scrape peg and boot, etc.). I recommend a pair of motorcycle boots that are just under mid-calf. There are many styles to choose from.

  3. Step 3

Go to your local shops, whether it be a motorcycle retailer, or a gear store such as Cycle Gear(tm). Bring a pair of thick socks with you, like you would wear with a pair of sneakers to go hiking in the cold. If you have socks that are tall (like mid-calf) that is ideal.

  4. Step 4

Choose a boot that fits your style, but more importantly, a boot that fits your foot properly. Just like any other shoe, make sure it's not too tight, and that your foot is not sliding around inside the boot when you're walking. Make sure too that the boot is made from a breathable material that insulates you from the heat generated from your bike, and will protect your foot in the rain. Many people like leather, others like Gore-tex.

  5. Step 5

Look for extra features for the money, such as removeable/replaceable pads for your shift foot (left), reflective strips, stabilizing foot and ankle support, ability to be adjusted around the ankle and leg. Not all boots have this, but little creature comforts might just ensure that you have a great relationship with your boots, both for short rides across town and long cruises to a different state!

  6. Step 6

Finally, and this is especially true in a store like Cycle Gear(tm), ask the staff what they think. Not only are they usually riders themselves, but they get constant customer feedback about the products they sell. If you're unsure after trying them on, take down the information about the ones you liked best, go home, and research them. Look at the consumer ratings and such. Then, when you decide on one, go back and buy it. Or, if you're really jonesing for a deal, try to find it on eBay.

  7. Step 7

When you get a pair of riding boots, don't ride without them! They really are crucial to protecting your feet, ankles and lower legs from trauma that can be caused by the road, driving, flying debris, and quick stops. Have a safe ride!
