Cooking with your children can be a great bonding and educational experience. Another great way to combine a child's love of cooking with an educational activity is to help your child create a recipe book. This is a fun way to learn about cooking, talk about family history regarding recipes, and practice their skills at writing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Recipe cards
  • Digital camera
  • pens
  • stickers
  • stock paper
  • clear page covers
  • notebook
  1. Step 1

First have your child pick out their favorite recipes. Encourage them to pick a wide variety of recipes. Pick some family favorites, some very simple recipes they could make on their own, and some snack recipes.

  2. Step 2

Help your child type or write the recipes onto recipe cards. This is a great time to work on spelling, typing, writing, and math skills.

  3. Step 3

Glue the recipe cards onto sturdy card stock paper.

  4. Step 4

As you make each of the recipes have your child take a picture of the completed meal or snack. Print the pictures out and glue the pictures below the recipe cards on the card stock paper.

  5. Step 5

Have your child add some finishing touches to each of the pages. They could use star stickers to rate the recipes. They could also write a little note about the recipe or a story about why they like that recipe or who they made it with. If it's grandma's potato salad recipe have them make a note of that.

  6. Step 6

Once the pages are finished put them in clear plastic sheet protectors. This will protect the recipes from kitchen spills. Kid cooking can get pretty messy! Then place the pages in a notebook for your child.

  7. Step 7

Encourage your child to use his/her recipe book to help prepare family meals. This will help them improve their cooking skills and gain some independence.
