Step 1
Buy the right model and system if you want to have cell phone service in Indonesia. Whether you are merely visiting, or planning a more extended stay, Indonesia has only GSM networks, so only these types of phones will work.

Make sure your phone is unlocked. Unless you decide to wait and get cell phone service in Indonesia immediately when you get there, you need to make sure your device can work with other networks. It has to be unlocked.

Buy a more international plan if you are visiting other countries as well. Although you'll get charged roaming fees, at least your cell phone service in Indonesia will work. The 2 outside carriers that provide roaming include Orange and Vodafone.

Consider purchasing a more permanent cell phone service in Indonesia if you will stay over a month. There are 2 providers available: Exclelcomindo Pratama and INDOSAT (PT Indonesian Satellite Corporation.
