Use the Feng Shui Bagua in your home to create harmony.

You can use the Feng Shui bagua in your home as a tool to increase wealth, enhance your mood, and even help you get a promotion at work. A tool for Feng Shui practitioners, the bagua is essentially a road map that relates certain areas of our home with our goals and desires in life. A traditional bagua is an octagon-shaped object divided into eight equal sections that surround a ninth inner portion. (“Ba” means eight while “gua” means area.) To use the bagua in the home, the eight outside areas are extended to form a perfect square. Thus, an eight-sided object becomes a squared divided equally into nine portions. By applying the bagua to your home, you can create positive (or negative, if you're not careful) changes in your life.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Feng Shui Bagua
  • Blueprint or floorplans
  • Inkjet transparency paper
  1. Step 1
The Feng Shui bagua can be extended to form a square for use in the home.
The Feng Shui bagua can be extended to form a square for use in the home.

To use the Feng Shui bagua in your home, you’ll have to align it with your front door. Using the front door as the anchor point, you’ll apply the rest of the bagua to the entire home. To get a better picture of how your home is divided according to the bagua, it will be helpful to find either blueprints or a floorplan of your home. Print out a copy of the square bagua onto a transparency sheet. Next, lay the transparency over the home floorplan to see which areas align. Since most houses are not perfect square shapes, you will have to imagine how your home can be divided into nine equal squares. (See tips section below for how to interpret irregularly-shaped home editions.)

  2. Step 2

Once you have an understanding of which areas of your home correlate to various aspects of your life, you can begin to make changes that will enhance your chi flow. Each area of the bagua is associated with a direction, a Chinese element, and colors. Using the correct colors and elements in the right spaces will enhance the positive flow of chi. For example, the fame and aspiration gua corresponds to the fire element and the color red. So you should place some red objects and maybe even candles to represent fire in that section of your home.

  3. Step 3

As you use the Feng Shui bagua in your home to make design choices that enhance chi flow, keep in mind that moderation is key. Feng Shui is all about balance, so you should be careful not to overdo anything. In the example in step 2, you would use red to enhance your fame and aspiration. However, you would not want to paint the room red, install red carpet, and have red bedding. Too much red will create an imbalance and cause bad chi flow.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pay attention to portions of your home that are irregularly shaped such as additions, extensions, or even recesses. Think of the main portion of your home as a square and consider these extensions or recesses as either enhancing or weakening the part of the bagua they attach to. If, for example, you added a sunroom onto the area of your home that corresponds to wealth and prosperity, the chi flow in this area is strengthened by the extension. If, by contrast, the wealth area of your home is cut into by an irregularly shaped recess, that wealth area may have weak chi flow.
  • While this article describes the way to apply the bagua to your home, remember that you can also apply the bagua to many other spaces including your lawn, your business office, your bedroom, or even your desk. You can enhance positive energy in any area---big or small---using Feng Shui.
  • Feng Shui is a rather complex system. While this article provides an introduction to using the bagua in your home, you'll want to do more research before you start to apply the principles of Feng Shui.
