This article will outline some easy to use tips for working with youth in sports.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Patience
  • Sense of Humor
  • Some knowledge of the game
  1. Step 1

Remember first and foremost this isn't about you, it's about the kids you'll be working with. It's their sport, their league, their team and you're kind enough to help out. Learn each kids name as soon as you can.

  2. Step 2

Before the season starts give the kids a test on the sport they're about to play. I know that sounds a little crazy but you'd be surprised to find out that the kids don't know as much about the game/sport as you would think. Don't take for granted they know what all the terms mean e.g. setting a screen or pick in basketball, where the slot receiver lines up in football, etc...
Try and make it fun but this will give you a sense of where you need to begin with your teaching.

  3. Step 3

Show kids what you want them to do. There's nothing worse than some coach yelling instructions to kids without any idea of what they really should be doing. Again, don't assume they know.

  4. Step 4

Make practice fun, instead of running laps, windsprints, make an obstacle course for the kids to run through. This can be done with cones or a couple of jackets laid on the ground. Once you get to know your kids allow them to come up with a part of the practice to do. Once they know and trust you they'll work very hard.
    Enjoy!
