Traveling abroad to a country that is almost a day ahead in time can be daunting. The excitement of visiting a new and exciting place can be disrupted by feeling exhausted from your lengthy flight. Now a days there are jet lag diets, jet lag pills, and jet lag exercise regimens. All of which are really unecessary, and not proven to be much help. Many travelers over think jet lag, and prepare for days for the jet lag attack. Just follow these simple tips that have worked for many, and myself and you will be surprized at how effective these tips help to avoid the dreaded jet lag.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Soft travel pillow
  • Soft travel/throw blanket
  • Eye mask
  • Bottled water
  • Fruit (of your choice)
  • Activities to keep you occupied: work/reading material/craft or hobbie.
  1. Step 1

Don't eat much on the plane. Remember, most people don’t eat airplane food because they’re hungry (and that includes food you bring on the plane yourself). They eat food on planes because they’re bored. As a precaution for hunger .... bring fruit and try to only drink water.

  2. Step 2

Avoid alcohol. Because of altitude, pressurization and dehydration, one drink during your flight has the alcoholic equivalent of nearly two and a half on the ground. Instead, drink as much water as you can.

  3. Step 3

If you feel like sleeping on the flight, then sleep. If you feel like working or watching the movie, that’s OK too. Then, at least twice during the flight, avoid getting hit by the beverage cart, and at least make an attempt to walk around the cabin.

  4. Step 4

Most IMPORTANT, it’s what you do once the plane lands that will make the biggest difference in your battle to avoid jet lag. No matter what time you land, no matter how long the flight, you MUST stay up until at least 11 p.m. local time. This is the most difficult, but most also the most important, challenge you’ll face. If you succumb to the temptation to take that 4 p.m. nap, no one will see you for three days — and that includes YOU! Almost inevitably, you’ll feel sleepy around 2 p.m. on the first arrival day. Do not eat a heavy lunch. Stand up. Take a walk..... but do not take that nap. If you do, you’ll find yourself awake at 3 in the morning. Again, stay up until at least 11 p.m. and then hit the sack. Then, on your return flight home, repeat the entire process.

Tips & Warnings
  • My husband an I just returned home from a trip to Paris, France. Our flight departed from Miami, Florida and 10 hours later we arrived in Paris. We followed these simple, helpful rules, and we had a much more enjoyable trip and return flight home.... jet lag free !

on 8/24/2009 The hardest thing with travelling and fighting jet lag is picking the right flight route. It's easier to say then do. I often use a really good shopping bot like Opodo (www.Opodo.com) which is excellent as it shows the flight time in hours and often even lists stop overs. Why do you want a detailed shopping bot to help with jet lag? Well...with this new aged society it is really easy to get overcome with cheap flights. Time and time again, I have bought cheap flights and almost all the time the flight times are crappy. Yeah, you won't pay the upfront price but you'll definitely pay for it in the end as you'll arrive somewhere at 4am in the morning and will have to try and stay up all day to overcome the jet lag. There is only so much caffine you can have without having the shakes as well. So...try and pick really good flight times. Travelsupermarket (www.travelsupermaket.co.u...
