We had a Welsh Pony that was the pasture bully. An old cowboy friend of ours taught us a trick.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hardware nut.
  • leather twine
  1. Step 1

We had a Welsh pony that was the most gentle guy that you ever saw. He was a once in a life time child's pony/ baby sitter. The only problem was, when we would get a new horse, the pony became a bully. He would attack any size horse. He had already been cut, when we got him, so he may have been proud cut.

  2. Step 2

One day a friend of ours was over observing this guy being the bully. He asked me to go get a nut. The kind of nut that you screw onto a bolt. A heavy one about the size of a .50 cent piece. And also a piece of leather string. Now you are probably wondering at this point , what I was wondering. what the heck was he going to do, I loved that little pony, even if he was a bully.

  3. Step 3

Our friend took the nut and tied the leather string around it. Then he tied the nut to the pony's front main, right above the eyes. When the pony stared to run after the horse, the nut would bounce, thumping him on the head above his eyes. He would stop, and start again, and did this a few times before he realized that he was doing it to himself.

  4. Step 4

This did break him of chasing the other horses, and he thought that he was doing it to himself. When he stopped his chasing we took the nut off, but kept it handy, just in case. We never had to use it again. We had the pony for over 20 years until he passed on.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the nut is high enough not to injure his eyes.
  • Check the nut often, so it doesn't hurt the horse.
  • ALWAY KEEP AN EYE ON THE HORSE TO SEE HOW HE WILL REACT.
  • KEEP THE NUT HIGH ABOVE THE EYES.
