The first step is to figure out where and how big you want the beds to be. Once decided, take the can of spray paint and map the locations. If you mess up it is okay respray the line. For example: I did two medium size beds in the front and on the sides I did half moon beds.

Take the shovel or whatever kind of machine you have, Unfortunately I had to do it the hard way. Dig up the entire layer of grass, roots and all. I am not going to say this part is easy, it's very labor intensive. This will take a while. Once all the grass is removed start to loosed the dirt so it is not packed solid. Discard in the garbage or bushes.

I had old bricks and concrete blocks that were in my backyard, this is what I used to line my flower beds. The greatest thing, it was free. Line bricks one after the other. Lay down flat or on the sides, you could even stack two if you have enough. If you want a little contrast or you are low on bricks take a mallet or hammer and start wacking the blocks. They will start cracking. They will crack in many different size chunks. You may need to get a male figure to help out, you do have to hit it pretty hard. Please make sure to use safety glasses for this part of the process. Once concrete is in chunks line the little beds with these. One more step and you will be ready to plant those flowers.

There is fabric that you can purchase that will help keep weeds from taking over the flowers. If you choose to do this, cut fabric to fit location. Take your topsoil and put a good two inches on top. Once you have your flowers, pick the locations and dig dirt away, cut a good size hole in the fabric, plant flower and cover. To finish add a mulch any type will work. You have created flower beds that not only can you enjoy you can be proud knowing that you created them. The best part of all there was a very minimal amount of money spent.

We bought a house in May 08 and the first thing my daughter and I did was put flowerbeds in. It was a lot of work but we can't wait to see them this Spring! 5* -
