Preparing garlic for cooking

You don't need fancy kitchen gadgets to effectively peel and chop up garlic for cooking. Clean up is easy too!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Can of food
  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Stainless steel spoon
  1. Step 1

Pull as many cloves as you need from the garlic bulb and lay the individual cloves on a cutting board.

  2. Step 2

Take a can of food (it doesn't matter what kind) and squarely hit each clove with the bottom of the can. The paper skin of the garlic clove will easily separate from the clove. Discard the skin.

  3. Step 3

Trim off the hard edge of each clove and discard. Cut lengthwise slits in each clove, and then chop by cutting perpendicular, across the width of each clove. Continue to chop the garlic until you achieve the desired size of garlic bits.

  4. Step 4

Clean your hands with soap and water. You can remove the smell of garlic by running water over your hands and simultaneously rub a stainless steel spoon. It's almost magic how the smell is eliminated!

Tips & Warnings
  • If you use a wood cutting board, you can try cleaning the board with a sprinkle of coarse salt (such as kosher salt) and a half of juiced lemon. Scrub the area you chopped on to remove the smell.
