Tell the Difference Between a Real Diamond and a Fake

It can be difficult to spot a fake diamond. Lab created gems often have properties very similar to those of the real thing. Fortunately, there are some simple tricks to telling whether a diamond is real or fake.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you are examining a loose diamond, hold it over a printed piece of paper. If the diamond is real, you should not be able to read the paper through the stone.

  2. Step 2

Breathe on the diamond. If the diamond is real, the resulting fog should clear up quickly. If the diamond is fake, the stone will remain foggy for several seconds. The reason for this is that diamonds are better able to withstand heat.

  3. Step 3

Hold the diamond up to the light and look out for reflecting colors. If you see a rainbow of colors within the stone rather than shades of gray, it does not have a diamond's properties of reflection.

  4. Step 4

If the diamond is real, you should not be able to spot any scratches on its surface. Diamonds are incredibly durable, and it takes a lot for them to become visibly scratched.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you still aren't sure whether you have a real diamond on your hands, take it to a reliable jeweler for an appraisal.
  • Make sure the jewelers you are working with are reputable. Sadly, there are many dishonest jewelers out there. Check with friends and family to see whether you can obtain a solid recommendation.
