Things You'll Need:
- You'll need: PVC cutter (avail @ hardware store), or a hack saw or even a small keyhole saw.
-
Step 1
Identify where the break in the line is and dig around the break at least 6 inches around it and maybe 2 inches below. The hole maybe full of water so you could use an old measuring cup or maybe one of the kids old sippy cups, of course with the lid off. Bail it out a best as possible. It doesn't have to be totally dry. Cut away the pipe at the break Hopefully leaving about a 2 inch gap between the two ends
-
Step 2
Next you'll need to identify the size of the pipe. i.e. 1" or 3/4" Here's where you'll need to go to the hardware store and get yourself a compression fitting in the size pipe you need.
-
Step 3
Come back to your hole in the ground and clean off any debris a couple of inches back on each end of the pipe to be repaired. Insert one end of your new fitting on one end, but don't tighten yet. Insert the other pipe into the fitting and then center it as best you can between the two ends of pipe. Now you can tighten them both. Get them as hand tight as you can.
-
Step 4
The moment of truth. If you can, take a nearby sprinkler head off and set it aside, this has a purpose. Turn on the valve that controls that line and check for leaks. If all is well then go ahead and bury your pipe and replace the sod or grass that you took up. Remember the sprinkler head that you took off? That is for leaching out any dirt that got in the line when you were repairing it. It may make a bit of a puddle but thats better than a clogged sprinkler head. Good luck, It should be no problem
