First step: you look around! See what's out there and currently available. You can check through the links below or go to your favorite search engine and do a search on 'free 3d animation software' or 'free 3d animators' Alternatively, you can go to www.download.com and search through the animation editors they have available -the benefit to searching there is that all their downloads are tested spyware free. Look around and compare the features available before settling on any program and consider getting more than one to find one that provides the features that best suit your needs.
I personally prefer blender or anim8tor (see links below) but there are many out there so keep your specific needs and intended uses in mind.

Finally, download and test out a few. Take note of the programs features as well as it's performance. Performance can later become a very big issue when using 3d animation software when doing larger projects. If the program lags or is prone to crashing on your computer/os with smaller projects -it will most likely only worsen with the larger projects. Just keep looking around and seeing what's out there until you find the program that works best for you. Good luck!
Also, feel free to leave a comment below if you have any questions or any input/ opinions on any 3d animating programs you have had good or bad experiences with to help other people get an idea of what to expect.

Tips & Warnings
Try out several programs before settling on a single one.
There are many benefits to using an open source editor -especially if you are developing to use with a separate program (in blender for instance, there is an independently developed plug-in that helps simplify exporting UV sculpty maps for developing sculpted objects in Second Life -which I have other articles on if you need help with that.)
Take proper precautions against spyware and viruses.
Read all 'terms of use' before downloading, installing, or agreeing to anything.
Make sure the program is compatible with your computer and that you meet all the user end requirements before downloading.
