Internet job listings can be useful when you are looking for a job. Here is how to find a job online.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First look at large internet job sites such as Craigslist and Monster.com. These sites have large numbers of listings, but they are usually not very focused. While it is good to look at them a couple of times a week, most people do not get job offers from these listings. There are simply too many applications for each job, so employers can choose candidates who have many years of experience and are generally over-qualified.

  2. Step 2

Look for websites that specialize in the area in which you want to work. For example, MedHunting.com focuses on listings in the medical profession and LawCareerAdvice.com specializes in job listings for attorneys. These sites will save you time, as their listings are tailored specifically for people with your training and experience.

  3. Step 3

Participate in online forums. These give you a place to discuss the state of the economy and your industry, and share ideas with other people who are looking for a job. Teamwork and mutual support can help everyone who participates in an internet forum to find a job faster. Share jobs listings to which you do not plan to apply with other people. They will appreciate your help and may alert you to online job listings of interest.

  4. Step 4

Consider posting your resume online. This can be done by creating your own website or starting a blog on a site such as Wordpress.com. Some sites that feature online job listings also allow you to post your resume. Having your resume online makes it easier for potential employers to find you. Be sure to cleraly state in your resume what types of jobs you are interested in. If you have an ideal salary range (within reason!) be sure to list that, too.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be persistent. It takes most people between 3 and 6 months to find a job. During a recession, the average job search can be even longer.
  • Internet job listings are not a substitute for making phone calls and meeting with potential employers in person.
