How to Become Familiar with MS Word Toolbars

MS Word has several types of tools bars. The Standard toolbar provides basic functions which involve files, opening, closing, and printing documents. The Formatting tool bar permits users to apply type styles, font styles, change font size, change font attributes and change text and text block alignment. These tool bars are usually default tool bars.

  1. Step 1

    Stardard toolbar

    The Standard Toolbar appears as follows (see graphic). The Format Painter is usually not part of the Standard Toolbar but can be added by selecting from menu Tools, Customize, Commands, Format. Once the Format Painter icon is found by scrolling, click on it and drag it up to the Standard toolbar at the location you wish to place it and release the mouse. Drawing allows one to toggle the Drawing menu on and off. Read is a version of Print Preview that displays your document like a book.

    The Formatting Toolbar appears as follows (see graphic). Functions pertaining to text formatting and placement are handled by this toolbar.

    The Drawing Toolbar provides menu and tool options that help users create drawings, format shapes, and to maintain graphics (see graphic). Other toolbars are found in the menu by selecting Tools, Customize, Toolbars. Some toolbars work with databases, forms, Web tools, and Visual Basic. Explore these and other toolbars to discover additional functionality.
