Things You'll Need:
- compost bin
- food scraps
- newspaper
- dry yard waste
-
Step 1
When my family began composting, we were amazed at how much less trash went out on the curb. Most of our trash had actually been food scraps! So now we spend much less on our trash pick up since we are charged per bag. The first step is to buy a simple compost bin. They are made out of plastic. Ours turns to make the process simpler, but you can buy a stationary one too.
-
Step 2
Look for a composter to buy online. Do your research and read reviews on each type of composter until you find one that fits your needs. Then do a google search for that composter. If you click on shopping results at the top of the google page, and then sort by the base price, you will find the best price online. Don't forget to take into account the cost of shipping, as these are not light.
-
Step 3
You want your compost mix to be about 50/50 green/brown materials. There will be information that comes with your compost bin to explain this, but basically green matter are your food scraps, and brown matter is your dried yard waste, newspaper, dryer lint. Follow the instructions and you will be on your way to rich compost for your garden, and your pockets will be full of extra money from your trash savings.
