Tumescent liposuction, or liposculpture, is a liposuction technique which involves injecting liquid into the fatty layer of the skin prior to removing the fat. The tissue becomes swollen ans firm, and allows the surgeon better control when performing the liposuction surgery. As with any surgery, the recovery can be painful and uncomfortable. Learn how to speed your recovery from liposuction surgery.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The typical recovery time form liposuction is 4-8 weeks. Each person is different. Recovery time also depends on how much surgery was done.

  2. Step 2

Apply ice to the affected areas. Ice not only reduces swelling, but it promotes the body's production of cortisone which helps speed healing.

  3. Step 3

Wear the compression garment as directed. The compression garment helps your body's shape return and compresses the skin back to the tissue below it. Remember, you've had an invasive surgery where an instrument was inserted between the skin and the tissue below it. These tissues have to reattach.

  4. Step 4

Expect some drainage. Since a solution was injected into your body before the surgery, the fluid will either be absorbed by your body or drain out. If you notice excessive bleeding or a foul odor draining from your incisions, contact your doctor immediately.

  5. Step 5

Take your pain medications as directed. Even though the surgery was elective, your body has suffered trauma and you will have pain. Don't be afraid to use the pain medications - that is why the doctor prescribed them. You won't need them forever.

  6. Step 6

Rest, rest, rest. As mentioned above, your body has suffered trauma and you need to rest to recover.

  7. Step 7

Drink lots of water. Your body needs to be rehydrated to heal.

  8. Step 8

Eat nutritious foods. The best way to heal from an invasive surgery is to nourish your body with healthy foods. Eat lots of leafy green vegetables, fruits, and other nutrient rich foods that will help your body recover. Avoid alcohol as it dehydrates the body - and if you are taking your pain meds, alcohol is not a good idea.

Tips & Warnings
  • Follow your doctor's instructions and don't hesitate to contact him with any questions about your recovery.
  • Don't try to return to life too quickly. Your body needs to recover.
