If your child is struggling with their ABCs he or she may need a little extra help. Everyone has their own way of learning and sometimes you have to try new things to help your child.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • large pair of scissors
  • medium to heavy sand paper
  • elbow macaroni
  • glue
  • construction paper
  • poster paint and brushes
  1. Step 1

First, cut each letter (upper case) out of sand paper. This will take some time so as soon as you get some letters cut, let your child hold them.

  2. Step 2

Next, as soon as you have all of the alphabet cut out, help your child make small words such as cat, dog, hat, etc. Ask them to say the name of each letter as they hold them in their hand. This will help make a more vivid impression on their memory.

  3. Step 3

Now, if you have some reason why cutting the sandpaper would be impossible, you could glue dry elbow macaroni to construction paper in the shape of each alphabet. Have your child trace the letters with their finger and say the name of the letter out loud.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your child likes to paint, you could let them paint the macaroni letters with poster paint. This will help them to have more hands on learning and will be different than just looking at pictures in a book.
  • Use word association with the macaroni letters also by helping them spell small words with them.
  • Preschoolers as well as other very young children need adult supervision when gluing and painting.
