Cooking with stevia is a simple way to add sweetness to foods without adding sugar or artificial sweeteners. Stevia (or sweet leaf) is a plant based sweetener that is found in powder or extract form. The instructions here use stevia powder to sweeten your favorite foods without adding calories or affecting your blood sugar.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stevia powder (either packets or bulk)
  1. Step 1

When adding stevia powder to a recipe, remember that it is not a direct one-to-one ratio with sugar. One half teaspoon of stevia equals approximately two teaspoons of sugar. This will vary depending on the brand of stevia used as they tend to differ from one another in sweetness. It may take some experimenting on your part.

  2. Step 2

For a two quart pitcher of iced tea or lemonade, add about 1 teaspoon of stevia powder. Adjust for your taste.

  3. Step 3

Try using one to one and one-half teaspoons of stevia powder instead of sugar in your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe.

  4. Step 4

When making homemade jam, use one-half teaspoon of stevia powder for every quart of fresh berries or fruits.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try sprinkling some stevia on fruit salad.
  • Add stevia to your coffee instead of sugar.
  • Avoid adding too much stevia to your foods or else they become bitter.
