Covert a ATX Power Suppy to DC Power Supply

You can use a computer's power supply to create a DC power supply with 12, 5, and 3.3 volts of steady power. You can use this for what ever your heart desires.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drill
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Soldering iron
  • 3 x "Banana Jack" Insulated Binding Post sets
  • 1 x bag of "#6" Ring Tongue Terminals (16-14 gauge)
  • Rubber feet
  • Small bit of heat shrink.
  • Screwdriver
  • Wire strippers
  1. Step 1

The first thing is safety. You will need to diffuse the remaining voltage in the capacitors. This will be residual power stored in the capacitors. To do this you will need to place a screw driver on the prongs of the AC plug. Do not worry you not be harmed in do this action. But it need to be done.

  2. Step 2

After you have diffused the capacitors, you can open up the unit and start to see just how much space you will have to work with. At this point you will also need to cut off all the connectors from the tops of the wires. You will need to cut them so that they are about a foot in length.

  3. Step 3

At this point we are only concerned about the black, red, yellow, and orange wires. You will need to cut the blue, white, and purple wires from the board, since these are not going to be used. Since you cut all the wire to the same length we can now put the tongue terminals on at this point.

  4. Step 4

At this stage we can now begin the drills of the holes in which the banana jacks are mounted to. For this you will need a 5/16 drill bit. Just make sure that you place the jack holes so that there will be no interference that could cause a short. Once you have placed the tongue terminals, you can go ahead and start placing the wires by color on the banana jacks.

  5. Step 5

After you have connected the tongue terminals, It is time to close it up. After closing be sure to color code and mark what voltage is come from each banana jack so as you will not be confused later on. After all this is done you now have a DC power supply. Have fun with this project.
