How to Replace a Wax Toilet Ring

Changing a wax ring can be quite easy, as long as you have the right tools and the flange is intact

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • wax ring,bolts,scraper,cloth,and a wrench
  1. Step 1

    The first thing you want to do is turn the water off. The shut off valve is located to the left of the tank right below.

  2. Step 2

    Remove the supply line that connects to the tank. You can use a wrench or pliers

  3. Step 3

    Remove the bolts that hold the bowl to the floor. You don't need to remove the tank, you can remove the whole toilet as an assembly. Some toilets are a little heavy You might want a helper

  4. Step 4

    Once the toilet is removed you will want to scrape the old ring away. This is done with a putty knife (scraper) Remove the old bolts and discard.

  5. Step 5

    Install new bolts and the wax ring

  6. Step 6

    Carefully set the toilet back in place and press down evenly

  7. Step 7

    Tighten nuts evenly until toilet doesn't wiggle or move Be careful not to tighten too much

  8. Step 8

    Reattach supply line and tighten nut by hand then using a wrench go 1/4 turn
