Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Big channel lock pliers
  • 12" crescent wrench
  • lighter
  • pipe thread compound
  • 2 new flex hoses
  • 1 new gas line
  • 1 water heater
  • 1 hack saw
  • 1 - 3/4" copper coupling to solder the pressure regulator drain line back.
  • 1 flux
  • 1 soldering wire
  • 1 sand paper
  • 1 lighter
  • 1 can of map gas
  • 1 soldering tip for gas tank
  1. Step 1

Turn the gas off for the water heater, just flow the gas flexible line from the water heater cause it run straight to the gas valve just turn the handle 90 degree to the pipe. Turn the water off from the cold water line on top of the water heater, if there is no valve you have to turn the water off for the whole house from the front of the house. After turning the water off, you should open any valve like kitchen faucet to release the pressure on the system.

  2. Step 2

Using the crescent wrench disconnect both flex hoses going to the top of the water heater, disconnect 1 piece of the vent pipe also on top in the center of the heater. Disconnect the water heater strap, disconnect the gas line and you can cut off drain line from the pressure regulator valve, cut it 6" away from the valve cause you have to solder it back to the new heater. Hook up a regular water hose to the water valve on the side close to the bottom, make sure the hose run downward so the water flow and no kink. Open the valve and drain the water heater so it will be really easy to move

  3. Step 3

Use pipe thread compound on all threaded connection. Put the new heater in place, put the strap back around it, put the ventilation line back to the top center of the heater. Install 2 new flex hoses, install new gas line. Now you can solder the regulator valve's drain line back.

  4. Step 4

Close all the valve or faucets that you open, turn the water back on , check to see if anything leak or need to be tighten, let it run and make sure that the water heater is full of water. Turn the gas valve on and light the water heater.
