Step 1
Perform some initial searches so that you can get an idea of price. Bike trailers can cost quite a bit of money, but if you are going to use it often, it's well worth it. Set a tentative budget to help guide you in your search.
-
Step 2
Consider safety before all else. Pay special attention to things like:
1. Seatbelt: Make sure that it is high quality and works well. A 5-point harness may be best.
2. A brightly colored bike trailer so that it can easily be seen by cars. Also consider looking for a unit that has a flag or one that you can add a flag to for added safety.
3. A roll bar is a very important safety feature in case of an accident. A roll bar will help to keep the sides in place should the trailer roll over.
4. Pay close attention to the wheels. If the wheel base is wide, it will help to prevent roll-overs in the first place. -
Step 3
Once you have the safety features out of the way, consider the other features that you'd like to have as part of your bike trailer. For example, if you also enjoy running, consider purchasing a model that also operates as a jogging stroller.
Think about how many children you'd eventually like to be able to fit in your trailer as well, since they do make them large enough for at least two children.
This is also the time to consider total weight, color, and all the other items that are important to you. -
Step 4
Make sure that the bike trailer you are considering comes with a generous warranty and return policy. You aren't really going to know if you like the model that you've purchased until you have a chance to use it a few times, so you want to be able to return it just in case things don't work out.

Step 5
Check internet reviews and talk to people that have actually used them in order to get a good idea of what people like and don't like about different models. Two very popular and quality models include:
Chariot Cougar
Burley Nomad
