Step 1
Remain calm and prepare to stay indoors during an ice storm. Keep coming and going from the home to a minimum, since heat will escape each time you open a door. Make one room in the house the place where you will all stay until the power comes on. It should be the warmest room and also a smaller one.
-
Step 2
Seal off the rest of the house with something against the crack under the door. If you have no heat at all you may want to set up a tent, if you have one, in the living room. Cover the tent with blankets and comforters to keep it snug and warm. Keep a flap slightly open for air and don't use plastic sheeting to prevent suffocation. Don't use any heater or candle in a tent.
-
Step 3
Keep a source of fresh air coming in. If you do have a portable kerosene or propane heater make sure you leave a window cracked to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Keep objects away from the heater to avoid fire. Stay tuned to emergency broadcasts so that you may know when the power may come back on and whether you may want to seek safety elsewhere.

on 3/25/2009 Very helpful information. No power is kind of an adventure - but when we went a week and a half with no power it was horrible! 5*s
