Having an extensive and vast vocabulary are characteristics of a smart person. Get in the habit of reading a high profile newspaper at least once a day. Instead of reading your local newspaper, try reading a copy of The Washington Post or even the Wall Street Journal. Expand your cultural horizons and get into economics and what's happening all over. Being a smarter person means being a an informed conversationalist. Practice talking about the stories you've read with a friend of family member.

Another way to be smart is to listen while others are talking. It's a smart move to listen closely what the other person is saying and acknowledge their points.

Be an expert in something! Pick a topic that is frequently discussed during social meetings. Dazzle people with your intelligence on that topic. When you speak eloquently on a topic, chances are, people will notice your intelligence and assume that you are a smart expert in your field!

Lastly, sounding smarter than you think means being able to watch what comes out of your mouth. Do not use words such as "it's like," "um" and "you know." These phrases make you sound less smart and scholarly. It helps to tape yourself and listen to how you speak your words. Follow these steps and you're on you way in sounding more intelligent and smart!
