This is a free step by step guide on how to start a handyman service - canvassing.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • fliers
  1. Step 1

By now you have given some free estimates, landed some jobs, and begun working. Leave a an hour early and pass out some fliers in the neighborhood you will be working in. Grab your fliers and some scotch tape.

  2. Step 2

Your fliers should be folded into 1/3 size with your business name a logo centered. You may simply drive up to mailboxes and either place the flier in the newspaper box beside the mailbox if available or you may stick the flier to side of the mailbox using a small piece of scotch tape. It is illegal to place anything inside the mailbox or the flag, but okay to stick it to the outside or tuck it anywhere else.

  3. Step 3

You head to your customers house and arrive 5 minutes early. Place your little sign out on the front lawn and park so people driving past will have a good view of your rolling billboard truck and be able to write your number down.

  4. Step 4

When you have finished up for the day, you need to go back out and place some more fliers in the neighborhood. Also offer your customer a referral for any completed jobs she helps you get. Give her a few fliers and business cards for her friends.

  5. Step 5

Make your rounds again in the neighborhood, this time scouting for people outside while you put fliers on mailboxes. When you see a target outside, perhaps working in the yard, casually approach them with a smile and wave and hello. Your voice will travel and it won't feel so awkward walking up to a stranger.

  6. Step 6

If they appear to be in a hurry & heading to the car, just hand them the flier and tell them to call you if they need you and let them go. If they seem interested in talking to you and comfortable with your presence, linger longer. Start up a conversation and mention what you are up to. "Oh well I just finished cleaning the pipes in Mrs. Burns backyard. Is there anything I could help you out with?" and see where that takes you :)

  7. Step 7
