Some auto repair is more involved than just using a little body filler or fiberglass repair kit. Sometimes you need to replace the whole body part.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • wrenches
  • ratchet and sockets
  • screwdrivers
  • pliers and vise grips
  • respirator or mask
  • safety glasses
  • gloves
  1. Step 1

Before removing the old part, assess the damage to your vehicle and decide exactly what you need. The best place to find auto parts for most vehicles is at a salvage yard.

  2. Step 2

Determine where all the bolts and screws are that hold on the damaged part. Then find the tools you will need to remove it.

  3. Step 3

If you found the body part you needed at a salvage yard, you will need to prep it before installation. Sand the entire surface using 150 to 220-grit sandpaper, assuring that the surface is smooth and free from scratches. Prime the entire surface.

  4. Step 4

Remove the old body part. Next, assess the vehicle for any further damages. If none are found, fit the new body part into place and bolt it down tightly. Reattach any wiring, antennas, etc. that you may have removed before removing the old part.

Tips & Warnings
  • New bolts and screws may be needed.
  • wear gloves when working with any sharp surfaces
  • when using primer or sanding parts, wear a mask or respirator
  • safety glasses should be worn any time you are sanding, painting, or working with things that may fly at your eyes
