If your old toilet seat is broken or you find that you just need a change, it's fairly easy to remove and replace the old toilet seat. In about 20 minutes, depending on how quickly the old toilet seat comes off, you can have an updated toilet that compliments your bathroom.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • New toilet seat
  • Monkey wrench
  • Lubricant
  • Drill bit
  1. Step 1

Lift bolt covers on each side of the old toilet seat. Using a monkey wrench, twist the bolt that holds the old toilet seat in place in a counter-clockwise direction. Keep twisting until it spirals completely off the screw.

  2. Step 2

If the bolt or screw is old and rusty, spray a lubricant such as WD-40 on toilet seat parts and let sit for a few minutes before attempting to twist the bolt again.

  3. Step 3

You can also drill into the bolt using a drill bit to loosen it from the screw. Repeat steps 1, 2, and 3 on the other side of the toilet seat and remove toilet seat completely. Set aside.

  4. Step 4

Clean the base of the toilet, where the old toilet seat was and the bottom of the toilet where the bolts and screws were, using a spray bathroom cleaner. Wipe dry.

  5. Step 5

Make sure the bolt covers on the new toilet seat are lifted and open and place the new toilet seat onto base of the toilet. Match toilet base holes with the screws on the new toilet seat and slide screws down in to lay the new toilet seat flat.

  6. Step 6

Using a monkey wrench, screw bolts in a clockwise direction onto screws and tighten upward toward toilet for security. Repeat on the other side. Snap bolt covers back into place and gently move toilet seat back and forth to be sure it is tight and secure. Enjoy your new seat!

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't have a monkey wrench, it is possible to use your fingers, but it you will not have the man power needed to loosen or tighten the toilet seat bolts as well as you should.
  • Be careful when unscrewing bolts that you don't break them. Most are made of plastic and can break easily if you twist them too tight.
