The most common cause of an ingrown toenail is cutting the nail too short on the sides or tapering the sides of the nail. This encourages the sides of the nail to then grow into the skin. The most ideal way to cut a toenail is straight across.

The other most common way to get an infected toenail is by wearing shoes that are too tight or too small. The trauma of the nail bumping against the shoe then causes the nail to get infected.

Wear comfortable shoes and even flip flops or sandals if possible. Monitor the toe to make sure it's not getting worse.

Look in stores or online for a fantastic product that I swear by called NailEase. It works immediately to relieve pain and pressure by glueing a thin piece of metal across the toenail, which then gently lifts the sides of the toenail and forces it to grown forward. I found this to be a miracle and permanent cure for any ingrown toenails.
