Sign up for and take a motorcycle safety course. You will learn counter balancing, counter steering, swerving, emergency breaking and even how to properly turn. There is simply no better way to learn to ride than taking motorcycle safety training.

Purchase some motorcycle riding books. I've linked three of the absolute best books available in the resource section below. Read these from cover to cover. Make sure you read them again before the start of riding season around springtime. You can never get enough motorcycle safety training because one mistake doesn't mean a scratched fender, it could mean your life.

Find a quite deserted area to practice your emergency maneuvers and your low speed turns. Remember when a critical situation comes up on the road it's too late to 'learn' how to swerve out of the way. You have a split second to decide if you will swerve or brake, and if you can't swerve correctly your only option is too break, you just better hope you have enough room left.

When you're riding constantly scan around you, see who's going to turn in front of you and react accordingly. Leave a 2 second gap between you and the vehicle in front of you. Motorcycle safety is not a spectator sport, you have to take an active role.

Scan the road for debris, motorcycles can easily go down if you try to turn on sand, wet leaves or even crushed plastic water bottles. A great majority of motorcycle accidents are single vehicle, meaning rider error, buy a book, learn about the hazards out there, and stay alive.

Cover the brakes when approaching an intersection or critical situation. It takes 1/2 a second to start braking, at 50 mph you can travel through the intersection before you even begin stopping, and by then it's way too late. This is one motorcycle safety tip you must follow.
