Synchronized swimmers use a variety of techniques to propel themselves across the water. One family of techniques is called sculls. Below, you'll learn how to do the torpedo scull.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A pool
  • A swimming suit
  • Goggles, cap and nose clip are optional.
  1. Step 1

Assume a good back layout. On your back, your body should be on the surface of the water. Pay special attention to your toes, hips and head.

  2. Step 2

Extend your arms overhead and flex your wrists so your palms are up. If you are at the side of the pool, you should be able to feel the wall with your palms.

  3. Step 3

Using your elbows and leading with your wrists, make gentle figure eights in the water above your head. This will propel you foot first to the other side of the pool.

  4. Step 4

Now that you're traveling across the water, pay special attention to your hips. Make sure that you don't let them sink.

  5. Step 5

After you've checked your hips, check to be sure the your toes are pointed and on the surface of the water.

Tips & Warnings
  • The torpedo is a fast scull. Once you get the basic motion, work on speeding up your arms.
  • Don't let your hips sink! This creates drag and makes the scull harder.
  • Keep your toes on the surface! If you let them drop far enough you have the potential to scull yourself under the water instead of across it.
