1
Purchase a box of grilling and fireplace matches. They are usually 11 inches long, allowing you to safely light your fireplace without getting too close to the falmes once it is lit.
-
2
Place the fireplace key in the gas valve and make sure that it is completely off. You have to make sure that there has been no gas fumes seeping into the air so make sure that the gas release valve has been off. If you place the key in the valve and find that it has not been completely off, DO NOT light the fireplace, open windows and doors so that any gas that has been seeping into the air leaves your home.

Strike your match and place it on under the gas logs but on top of the fireplace grates. If you do not have fireplace matches, you can use the jumbo sized matches. Just make sure that the key is in the gas release valve before you strike the match. Strike two or three matches and drop them in the openings between the gas logs. Again, this helps against being burned. It can not be stressed enough that the gas release valve should be completely off prior to lighting or striking the match.

While your match(es) is lit under the fireplace, slowly turn the key so that the gas valve slowly releases the gas from the logs. Now your fire should be lit and you can determine how high or low you'd like it to be. I've included a link in the resources section of this page for gas burning fireplaces.

Tips & Warnings
Do not turn the gas on before lighting the match. This increases the risk of an explosion.
If you have small children, never leave the fireplace key in the gas release valve.
