How to Make a Low Sugar Pecan Pie
According to the National Pecan Shellers Association, pecan trees are the only nut tree native to North America. Pecans have high nutritional value, and have grown in popularity over the years and are frequently used in baking. Pecan pies are a traditional Southern U.S. dessert. The typical recipe calls for dark corn syrup and brown sugar combined, however you can use less sugar or substitute sugar altogether with alternative natural sweeteners. Sometimes trial and error is the only way to get the ideal results, but you can use a basic recipe to get you started. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Mixing spoon
- Large mixing bowl
- Cooking utensils
- 1 uncooked pie shell
- 1 stick butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tbsp. vinegar
- 1 to 1.5 cups pecan halves

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Gather all your mixing and baking items together.

Melt the stick of butter and let it cool to lukewarm. Stir in sugar and mix it together well.

Beat the eggs and add them to the sugar and butter mixture. Stir in the vinegar.

Add the pecans and blend all the ingredients together thoroughly. Scoop them from the bowl into the pie shell.

Bake for 30 to 40 minutes until the top of the pecans are evenly browned. Remove from oven and let the pie stand at least 30 minutes before serving.

Tips & Warnings
Xylitol is a natural sweetener that can replace sugar part-for-part. Other sweeteners you can use are granular fructose, maltitol or stevia, but taste test first as these can be very sweet and you can overdo it substantially. Stevia is especially strong, and you'd probably only use 1 tbsp.
Try adding a dash of bourbon or rum to the mixture for extra flavor.
You can use brown or white sugar, or a mixture of the two, depending on your taste or what you have on hand.
Double the basic recipe to make two pies.
