It is quite simple to drain the coolant from the radiator of a Ford Powerstroke diesel truck. Make sure that the engine is cool before you start. If you are flushing the coolant system, have the appropriate flush kit available. If you are draining the coolant to do other work to the vehicle, and plan on re-using it, make sure your collection container is very clean.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a drain pan or bucket to collect the coolant, approximately 5 gallons.
  • a small wrench or pliers to loosen drain plug.
  • enough new coolant to refill the radiator.
  1. Step 1

Loosen the fill cap, located on the coolant fluid tank.

  2. Step 2

Place a drain pan or bucket under the radiator drain valve located on the bottom of the radiator. (My 7.3 liter Powerstroke diesel holds 5 gallons)

  3. Step 3

Loosen the drain valve. Turn it counter-clockwise with the wrench or pliers to loosen it. This will allow the coolant to run out of the spout or hole.

  4. Step 4

Make sure the drain pan is under the valve and drain all of the coolant out.

  5. Step 5

Once the radiator is empty, tighten the valve and refill the radiator.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a funnel when re-filling
  • use a pre-mixed coolant/anti-freeze or mix according to your climate to prevent engine freezing
  • re-cycle or properly dispose of engine coolant. Some auto parts stores may accept used anti-freeze.
  • Make sue engine and coolant is cool!
  • do not start engine without coolant in it.
  • Make sure the collection container is large enough or have a second container handy.
  • Keep used coolant in an enclosed container so that pets don't drink it. It can be poisonous!
