The main reason people have poor credit is that we live beyond our means. The first step to increase and improve your credit score is to establish a budget and stick to it.

Get a free copy of your credit report.

Review your personal information for errors. I have found that negative things sometime fall off because of errors in our personal information.

Based on our current less than perfect credit there are a few do's and don'ts. first the don'ts. Do not mess with items over 2 years old unless they are completely wrong and you have proof. Then have them removed through the specific bureaus. Do not close old credit card accounts even if you pay the balance off. Do Not keep having your credit pulled when you know you have not improved your score and can not qualify. Nothing changes miraculously. You have to make it happen.

Do continue to pay all debt on time. Do pay down credit balances with out closing the accounts. Do get secured accounts from your local banks or local credit unions. You should develop 2 to 3 accounts with perfect payment history for 12 months and low balances.
