There are some easy and inexpensive natural pesticides you can make at home to help you win the battle of the bugs and be eco-friendly.   • liquid soap
  • garlic cloves

      Liquid soap is a great alternative to toxic chemicals for both indoor and outdoor plants.

      Mix 2 tablespoons of liquid soap or dishwashing liquid with 1 quart water, and pour into a spray bottle. Most indoor household plants tolerate this natural pesticide well. Spray leaves, stem and topsoil to deter insects from coming back.

      Aphids, mealybugs, whiteflies and mites are all affected by this soap remedy.

      If you need a stronger soap formula, try this:

      4 garlic cloves (segments) finely chopped
      1 small onion finely chopped
      1 tblsp. cayenne (red) pepper
      2 tblsps. liquid soap
      1 quart water
      Mix well and let set 1 hour. Strain and pour into a spray bottle or other container. Refrigerated, this natural insecticide will last up to two weeks.

      Cabbageworms and spider mites can wreak havoc on your garden plants. Try using 2 tblsps. of sea salt added to a gallon of water, and spray your plants with the mixture.

      If you grow tomatoes and roses, here's an easy remedy to keep pests away from your roses.

      In a blender, combine approx. 1 cup of tomato leaves, 2 pints of water, and 2 tsps. of cornstarch. Strain and spray on your roses.

      Homemade pesticides are an ideal alternative to protect your family and your plants, from pesky insects and toxic chemicals.

Tips & Warnings

  • Spearmint and wintergreen oil can be used to deter fleas.

  • Reapply your natural pesticides after a rain to continue protecting your plants.
