Step 1
Bryce. Bryce is an all season resort on the front range of the Alleghenies in the Shenandoah Valley. There are 8 trails. A good place for beginners and easily accessed by I-81.
-
Step 2
The Homestead. Another all season resort. Also in the Alleghenies. Also a place for beginners. Expensive and not worth skiing at if you are a skier.
-
Step 3
Massanutten. A nice resort nestled into Massanutten Mountain in the middle of the Shenandoah Valley. There are 14 trails. Massanutten is a resort on par with a good ski area in northern Pennsylvania. It has some varied terrain, including a snowboard park. It’s fun. Warning: Crowds can be a real pain.
-
Step 4
Wintergreen. Wintergreen is a resort that could be called high end. It is at the top of Wintergreen Mountain which is about 4000 feet. This means they can make snow when the other three can not. It has 26 trails and even a high speed quad to whisk you up the mountain quickly so you can spend more time on the slopes. It’s my favorite of the 4.
-
Step 5
It is rare that real snow graces the slopes of these places but they do a pretty good job of making it. If you just need to ski, and you live in or around Virginia, it’s good to know that it can at least be done.
And sometimes there is actually real snow. On these days I squint really hard and can almost convince myself that I’m at Loveland Pass. Almost.
