How to Paint Ceramic Tiles
Ceramic tile is paintable, whether it is already installed or ready to be installed. Add a design or paint the whole tile a new color. Painting ceramic tile is an inexpensive way to update a bathroom or kitchen backsplash, and it can be fun too! Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 150-grit sandpaper
- Trisodium Phosphate (TSP) cleaner
- Cloth
- Paintbrush
- Bonding or ceramic primer
- Gloss latex paint
- Urethane sealant

Sand the surface of the tiles lightly for proper adhesion.

Remove any dirt, grease or soap scum with your TSP cleaner and a dry cloth. Remove any excess cleaner with a wet cloth, rinse and allow to dry completely. Be sure the tiles are absolutely clean so the paint will stick.

Apply a coat of primer and allow to dry completely.

Use your paintbrush to apply the paint onto the tile. Depending on the color of the original tile, it may take several coats to fully cover it.

Allow them to dry for two to three days, and avoid scratching the surface until they are completely dried.

Apply a clear, water-based urethane to all tiles and let dry.

Tips & Warnings
When sanding, use a face mask to avoid inhaling any dust or debris; also use proper eye safety goggles.
