If you are having difficulty sleeping, take a look at your bedroom. Think about what elements promote a good nights sleep, sound, darkness, and warmth are elements to consider. Next, spend a little time preparing your bedroom for a good night sleep using the tips below.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Keep your bedroom as dark as possible. This may mean installing light blocking shades, or blinds, if you are a daytime sleeper.

  2. Step 2

Use the bedroom only for sleeping. Watching television, working, or doing other things in the bedroom may make it more difficulty to relax. Electronic devices such as televisions and computers also emit light when they are on making it more difficult to sleep. Another reason to clear your room of such devices is they emit Electro Magnetic Fields, EMFs, which are unhealthy. Keeping them out of the bedroom reduces exposure at least during the hours of the day you are resting. Place your alarm clock in a location that you are not continually looking at it and the light does not significantly disturb you if it is electric.

  3. Step 3

Make sure your bedroom is warm enough to promote sleep. Cold hands and feet can keep you from drifting off to sleep, or cause nighttime waking. Wearing socks to bed is also a good idea for this reason.

  4. Step 4

Pleasant scents, such as lavender and mint, can be kept in the bedroom to promote sleep. These scents are known for their calming effect. If you have them on hand, you may want to place them near the head of your bed to help you drift off to sleep.

  5. Step 5

White noise, or relaxation CDs, can help you sleep, if you find the noise relaxing. Listen to a few CDs to see if this relaxes you. Another idea to help you relax is to keep a journal in the bedroom to journal your thoughts before sleeping.

  6. Step 6

A bedroom equipped with a comfortable mattress, pillow, and blanket can make a big difference in your ability to sleep. If you frequently have difficulty sleeping, consider purchasing some new bedding. Test them out, whenever possible, to ensure they are comfortable before buying.

on 2/3/2009 Good tips! Blue light is especially good at keeping people awake (resembles daylight to your mind) which is why many alarm clocks have red numbers... they don't keep you awake as much! 5*
