Pomegranates are a delicious fruit that many people avoid because they don’t know how to eat them. Once you get the hang of it, it’s not so hard. Although it requires more effort than peeling a banana, and can be a bit messy, it’s still a delight no one should live without. Try this method and learn how to eat pomegranate the right way.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fresh pomegranate
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Large bowl of water
  • Strainer
  1. Step 1

Place the pomegranate on a cutting board. Use a sharp knife to cut off the top, or crown, of the fruit.

  2. Step 2

Slice the skin into segments about 1-2 inches wide, beginning at the top of the pomegranate and ending about 1 inch from the bottom.

  3. Step 3

Place the pomegranate into a bowl of water and allow the fruit to soak for 5-10 minutes. Peel the skin apart in the water and discard. Allow the fruit to sink, while the rind floats to the top, then skim rinds from the top of the water.

  4. Step 4

Gently, but swiftly, move the bowl in a circular motion, agitating to separate the fruit from the rind. Use a strainer to drain the water from the fruit. Eat or juice the resulting fruit/seeds, as desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try mixing the pomegranate fruit and seeds with plain or flavored yogurt for a healthy, low-fat snack. Or, try them in fruit salad or smoothies for added taste. Once you’ve learned how to eat pomegranate, there’s no limit to what you can do with them. Try them in all your favorite recipes.
  • Pomegranate is a messy fruit and the juice will stain clothing. Be careful not to get it on any light colored fabrics.
