1. DON'T TRY TO FORCE YOUR MATE TO TALK THINGS OUT IMMEDIATELY. Sometimes men just need time to process situations before they talk about next steps. So hearing the phrase, "I need some time" is not always a signal that communicating about the issue is not important. Give your mate space to think.

2. DON'T PUSH YOUR BOYFRIEND OR HUSBAND TO SHARE HIS FEELINGS. Men, in general, find it difficult to share their deepest emotions. Forcing your boyfriend or husband to do this can be a source of considerable distress for both of you. Let your mate know that you'll listen when he is ready to talk.

3. WHEN YOU TALK TO YOUR BOYFRIEND OR HUSBAND, BE RESPECTFUL. Everyone wants to be respected but this is very important to men. As hard as it may be to be respectful to your boyfriend or husband in some situations, it is important to not use words that might make him feel less than a man.

4. PRACTICE ACTIVE LISTENING WHEN TALKING TO YOUR BOYFRIEND OR MATE. Active listening really places the attention on what he is saying-and not your thoughts or desire to have the last word. In a nutshell, it is a way of saying back to him what he has said. The purpose of this is to make sure that you're understanding him correctly. Active listening requires skill. Getting some practice in this area can make a big difference when communicating with your boyfriend or mate.
