How to Block a Phone Number on a Cell Phone

There are people who frequently call our cell phones who we don't want to hear from. Cell phone companies have come out with a slew of new phones that have various call blocking features. Being that bill collectors are getting increasingly aggressive, and new technologies make it easier for people to call using private and unavailable numbers, it is nice to know that you have ways to ward off certain undesirable callers.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the phone number that needs to be blocked. This might be a bill collector, an annoying friend or even a troublesome relative.

    • 2

Save the phone number into your phone with a generic name, such as "Ignore" or "Block." If you have multiple numbers that you need to block, just add a number after each name, or write in the name of the person to be blocked.

Go to the phone number entry that you want to block and click "edit." Click down until you see an option for ringtones. Select "no ring" under ringtones for that contact. This will make it so that there are no noises when this person calls.

Click settings on your phone and look up "call restrictions." If you have an option to block all private and unavailable calls from your phone, do so. If not, call your cell phone provider and ask them to set up your line to block all private, restricted, and unavailable calls.

Go to your text messaging options and settings and enter the phone number you want to block from sending you text messages. Some phones are equipped with text message blocking as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • When blocked callers leave a message, you usually receive a short ring telling to let you know that you have a new voicemail. So if you really don't want to be notified of a certain call, you will also have to turn off the sounds for your voicemail notifications.

  • These steps may vary according to your specific cell phone.

  • In the future, give people an 888, 866, or 877 number to contact you instead of a cellphone number. This way, you can block them or delete them completely from calling you if they become bothersome.

  • Don't argue with or entertain unwanted callers; it can create an even more serious situation. Just ignore and implement blocking options.
