Many knitters find that they love knitting---but they hate all the seaming at the end of a project. That's no problem for rectangular projects like a scarf, but to go seam-free on projects such as arm warmers, socks or this great hat, you need to knit in the round.
This step-by-step tutorial shows you how to knit a slouchy, rolled brim hat entirely in the round. Once you get the hang of that, it's easy to customize with different brims, patterns, tassels or even earflaps.

Things You'll Need

  • Approximately 200 yards of heavy-worsted weight yarn
  • 1 pair US 10 12″ circular needles (or a size that gives you the correct gauge)
  • Darning needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Knit a test swatch to check your gauge and adjust your needle size as required. The gauge for this project is: 3 stitches = 1 inch, 12 stitches & 20 rows = 4 inches.

    • 2

Begin your hat by casting on 46 stitches. Then hold the needles so that the start of your cast on row is in your left hand and the end is in your right hand. Place marker to indicate the start of the round.

    • 3

Be sure that your stitches are not twisted and join the row by knitting the first stitch off the left needle. Continue knitting the left stitches just as you would with straight knitting needles.

    • 4

Knit every row until the hat is 12 inches in length.

    • 5

On the next row, decrease by knitting together two stitches all across the row. This will leave 23 stitches on the needle (it will be tight on the circular needle and you may have to tug the stitches towards the end of the row). Remove the marker.

    • 6

Clip yarn, leaving a 12-inch tail. Using the darning needle, thread this tail through the remaining stitches on needle and draw tightly. Knot and then weave in end. Weave in the cast on end as well.

    • 7

Block lightly if necessary. Enjoy your seamless hat, knitted in the round.

Tips & Warnings

  • As you knit this hat, the cast on row will roll up slightly to form a brim. Remember, when knitting in the round the right side is always facing you.
