Instructions for Making a Coffee Cup Koozie

When it comes to keeping your coffee warm, this Koozie fits the bill. Using an acrylic or blended yarn will make it washable and dryer safe. These koozies are easily rolled or folded up and carried with you wherever you go. Worsted weight yarn is the best, but other types of yarn such as fun yarns can be used also.

Things You'll Need

  • Worsted wieght yarn (your choice of color)
  • Size 7 needles.
  • Sack needle or wide head stitching needle
  • Ruler

Instructions

    • 1

Looping the yarn around your index finger, slip the loop onto the knitting needle, pulling it tight. Repeat the looping process until you have 48 stitches cast on the needle. Leave an 8" tail of yarn at the spot where you began.

    • 2

Knit the first row and purl the second row. Repeat the two rows twice more, for a total of 6 rows.

    • 3

Knit the seventh row. This is a decrease row, so you will knit 2 stitches together at the beginning of the row and continue knitting the row until you reach the last two stitches. Knit the last two stitches together.

    • 4

Knit rows 8 and 9. Repeat rows 7, 8, and 9 three more times. Knit four more rows and bind off loosely. Note that if you would like the koozie to be longer from top to bottom on the cup, simply add a few more knitted rows before binding off loosely.

    • 5

Cut the yarn after you have pulled it through the last stitch, and remove the stitch from the knitting needle. Turn the koozie inside-out and fold it in half. Thread the tail of yarn through the wide eye of the sewing needle.

    • 6

Match the ends of the koozie together and sew them together, weaving the end of the thread through the stitches and tying it in a knot to secure it tightly. Turn the koozie right side out and slip it over the cup from the bottom up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use up any spare scraps of leftover yarn for a fun and interesting koozie. For a masculine appearance, use rich, subtle colors. Bulkie yarns make a wonderful koozie.

  • Wool yarns need to be hand washed in cold water and laid flat to dry.
